Field Sobriety Tests in Miami
Guidance from Our Florida DUI Attorney
When you were pulled over for drunk driving, the law enforcement officer may have asked you to perform a field sobriety test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has helped developed the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. These three tests are used to determine whether or not a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN testing) works by detecting involuntary jerking in the eye. Usually, this occurs naturally when the eye looks from side to side. However, when a person is under the influence of alcohol, this jerking is increased and at different angles. If an individual cannot follow an object or the angle is abnormal, the law enforcement officer may place them under arrest.
- The walk and turn test is a divided attention test that is difficult to complete if under the influence of alcohol. They are required to walk heel to toe along a straight line as well as count out loud. If they cannot keep their balance or they take the wrong amount of steps, the law enforcement officer will assume they are inebriated.
- The one leg stand test requires the suspected drunk driver to balance on one foot while counting out loud. This lasts for thirty seconds, but if they cannot complete the test in the specified amount of time, they may be arrested.
